The global pandemic that kicked off 2020 really changed the world and created a whole new way to do business. The recruitment and staffing industry was hit hard because there was no way to conduct interviews face-to-face during lockdown. Our industry drastically changed and we had to adapt. New hiring practices were quickly put in place to allow us to continue doing our job of placing talented individuals. We’re almost one month into the year and although we can’t believe that time is flying this quickly, new hiring trends for 2021 have already begun to emerge.


Remote employment is not going anywhere.

When the pandemic first started no one really knew it would last this long. Many companies assumed that it would pass in a couple of months and then it’s back to business as usual. Clearly that did not happen, enter WFH (work from home). This recruitment and work trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In fact, many companies have realized that their employees don’t need to be in a physical office to be productive.


Virtual Recruitment is here to stay.

It may have been on snooze, but the job market never sleeps even through a pandemic. So if you’re on the hunt for a new role, get your wi-fi, sound, and lighting in order because virtual interviews are still going strong in 2021 and is predicted to continue on. The format of interviews is no longer the standard one screening, one in-person interview, then an offer is made. It’s difficult to get a sense of the candidate over a virtual meet, so be prepared to go through multiple virtual interviews as well potential assignments in order for employers to understand who you are.


Freelance gigs are on the rise.

Flexibility has become one of the most desired benefit of a role. The traditional Monday to Friday 9-5 has been flipped on its head due to the need for employers to be more flexible with their employees, and new hires’ schedules. Flexibility is wanted to take care of sick family members or homeschool children due to the pandemic and lack of other options. Freelance work allows individuals to take on roles that fit their schedules and still allow for a good income.


Skills upgrading to fill in gaps.

As recruiters we are always looking to place skilled employees within organizations we know they’ll thrive in. We found that although many companies were hiring, the skills gap was made more obvious. 2021 will have an upward enrollment in online learning and skills upgrading to further help candidates land their dream roles.


COVID-19 safety protocols are important.

Every recruiter will tell candidates to always interview the employer as well to make sure this is the right environment for you. So what is a question that will definitely be trending in 2021? “What COVID-19 protocols does your organization have in place?” Candidates want to know if they can work from home, conduct meetings virtually, work flexible hours, and if going to the office is essential, is the physical office space following government mandated protocols.


Although the job market looks very different this year, there are still many opportunities out there. Organizations still need talented employees to grow their business and individuals still need to work. The trends we discussed are all very positive; the recruitment industry is so strong we have learned to adapt by utilizing new tools and resources to ensure that we can still do our jobs and help people find their dream roles!
