We are all guilty of setting New Year’s resolutions that we fully intend on keeping when we set them, but sadly these resolutions are never accomplished. According to Forbes, “The statistics on how many people actually follow through and accomplish their New Year’s resolutions are rather grim. Studies have shown that less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days, and only 8% accomplish them.” So, Set SMART goals!
The word “resolution” actually means a firm decision to do or not to do something. But it seems over the years; it has become a negative word. Something that is thrown away after a few weeks of trying without holding yourself accountable. We encourage all our candidates to go after their dreams no matter how grand, so this year, we recommend setting New Year’s GOALS, not resolutions. The best way to set goals and achieve goals is through SMART goal setting.
Let’s say your goal for 2021 is to secure your dream job within the cannabis industry. Let’s play out an example of setting SMART GOALS.
SPECIFIC – state exactly what your goal is in an actionable manner, be as clear and specific as possible.
You want to get a new job this year.
You want to work in the Cannabis Industry as a Territory Manager
MEASURABLE – provide a way to evaluate the process along the way. Are your methods working, or do you need to reevaluate?
Send out resumes and see what happens.
Send out resumes and keep track of the amount you sent, call-backs you’ve received, and interviews you’ve had. Use any feedback to either make edits to your plan or continue if you feel that you are on the right track to securing your goal in the desired timeline.
ATTAINABLE – ensure that your goals are within your reach and make sense for you. You can accomplish anything you set your mind to but be honest with yourself about how much work you’re willing to put in and re-evaluate the goal.
You have never worked as a Territory Manager and think it would be easy to jump into that role.
You have a dynamic resume full of account management, customer service and sales experience that you can leverage to obtain a Territory Manager role in the Cannabis industry.
REALISTIC – think about what you want to achieve as a long term goal beyond this year and evaluate if this specific goal will get you to your ultimate dream goal. Is this truly something you can accomplish this year?
You want a job in cannabis, although you have never worked in it but think it’ll be easy to get one because it’s a new industry.
You will take some courses, attend seminars, and/or attend networking events to gain more experience. You will even consider taking a less senior role to build your skill set to secure your dream job as a Territory Manager.
TIMELY – Be very clear on the timeline of when you want to accomplish your goal. Create an implementation plan with each step having its own deadline
Your timeline is open-ended and will be considered completed when you secure a new role.
You set a 6-month deadline to secure a new job and create an implementation plan within that timeline.
Saying you want to do something without any real actionable tasks and deadlines behind that goal results in failure. It’s not because you don’t have the ability to achieve your goals; it’s more, so they were not defined enough to allow you to focus on accomplishing them. Using the SMART method helps build out a plan regardless of how large your goal is. DREAM BIG but have a plan.
